Heavy Metal Tour

History

CWIMMA founded the concept of the Heavy Metal Tour in 2012. The Heavy Metal Tour (HMT) began four years ago with 350 students. It now has grown to 56 companies, 10 counties and 3,800 students in 2015. Since 2012, the tour has facilitated 8,650 students through the program.

The HMT partners with CWIMMA, Mid-State Technical College, Nicolet College, North Central Wisconsin Workforce Development Board, Northcentral Technical College, Marshfield Chamber of Commerce, Wausau Chamber of Commerce, Portage County Business Council, Incourage Community Foundation and MCDEVCO. All of these groups have come together to educate students about manufacturing in the central Wisconsin region.

Goal

By the year 2020, there will be an expectant workforce shortage because of outbound population migration. The U.S. is expected to be 18 million skilled labor workers short and Wisconsin ranks 7th worst in U.S.

The goal of HMT is to entice students to cross sectional career pathways in manufacturing in North Central Wisconsin, and show that there is a place of employment for people of all demographics.

Manufacturing is the primary economic stabilizing sector in Wisconsin and the North Central Region, it is imperative that we create awareness among our youth to provide a manufacturing future for our regional economy.
